England press conference LIVE: Gareth Southgate’s final 26-man Euros squad is CONFIRMED as Three Lions boss axes seven stars including Jack Grealish and Harry Maguire

17:14

Southgate on leaving out Branthwaite

on Branthwaite: ‘It’s a bit early for Jarrad. He’s had a fabulous season. You’d like that balance of left footers. For him to be ahead of the others I don’t think that would have been the right decision.’

‘We’re a lot of changes from Qatar. It’s impossible to say what’s the squad you want. The decision on picking a squad is always a moment in time. You’re trying to balance experience with younger players who are playing so well that we can’t ignore what they’re doing. We’ve always tried to do that. That has brought a hunger, a competitiveness. The key now is we’ve got to bond as a group. The group have got to work together. The 15 who are disappointed, a lot of them will be key each match. We’ve got good guys, good professionals.’

17:12

Southgate on naming three strikers in his squad

‘We have been attacking, the different profile of strikers is the reason for three. Harry is the starting guy but Ollie and Ivan have different attributes and different strengths. The way the game is now is five changes. The demands on the squad, the squad is going to be so important. We’ve got different options and we’ll use them.’

17:10

Rice on Mainoo and Wharton

Declan Rice: ‘We saw what Kobbie could do and what he’s done at Man United. He fully deserves his place in the squad.

‘Adam has been outstanding. In training he’s impressed a lot of players, he’s so composed on the ball. He wants to learn. What a moment for him and his family. I know he’s one who won’t take it for granted. He’s ready for the big stage. The future’s looking bright for England in midfield.’

17:09

Southgate on Maguire’s injury

Southgate reveals that Harry Maguire wouldn’t have been fit for the group stages.

‘The decision on Harry is totally about his physical condition. He’s one of our strongest centre-back.

‘Lewis and Marc played the other night but Konsa’s had an excellent season at Villa. He played at centre-half for us in March and was outstanding. Joe Gomez can play in various different positions.’

Southgate adds that Jarell Quansah, who has been left out of the squad, has remained with the group ahead of tomorrow’s game against Iceland.

17:07

Southgate on omitting Grealish and Maddison

‘All of the players took the news really respectfully. All players are going to believe they should be in. The fact is we’ve got some players who have been playing extremely well all season in the league. Other players have had strong seasons, particularly in the last six months.

In the attacking areas we’re blessed with different options.’

17:04

Southgate on leaving players out

‘You’ve got this difficult scenario where people are having to wait for bad news. You try to do it as respectfully as possible. For the players that aren’t coming with us it’s a devastating blow. They’ve all been amazing with how they’ve dealt with it.

‘We’ve got that balance, excitement and a bit of remorse for a difficult day.’

16:58

Southgate set to address the media

Everybody has had their say on the England squad and it’s now almost time for Southgate to explain his decisions.

It will be especially interesting to hear his comments on the omission of Jack Grealish, while there may also be some fitness updates on the likes of Luke Shaw.

16:50

England stars set to gain valuable tournament experience

One of the striking things about Southgate’s squad is that 12 players have ten caps or under.

The likes of Kobbie Mainoo and Cole Palmer could be part of the England squad for years to come and will undoubtedly benefit signficiantly from being part of the squad.

England squad members with 10 caps or less:

Guehi, Bowen, Dunk, Ramsdale, Palmer, Eze, Konsa, Gordon, Toney, Mainoo, Wharton, Henderson

16:38

Eze earns his place in the squad

Eberechi Eze is an established Premier League star owing to his eye-catching performances for Crystal Palace.

Eze has had to be patient with regards to his England career, however. He was named in the provisional squad for Euro 2020 but was ruled out of contention after suffering an injury in training.

Now, though, he is part of the final squad for Euro 2024, with his impressive display against Bosnia and Herzegovina surely going a long way to secure his inclusion.

Will the skilful 25-year-old have a part to play at the tournament and could he provide Southgate’s team with the different qualities that they are in need of.

16:29

OFFICIAL: England’s 26-man Euros squad is confirmed

It was already widely known, but now England’s Euro 2024 squad has been officially announced. These are the 26 players who will be carrying the hopes of the nation on their shoulders.

It’s now confirmed that Grealish, Maddison, Jones, Maguire, Quansah, Branthwaite and Trafford haven’t been included.

Has Southgate made the right decisions?

16:24

Attention turns to Iceland

It makes sense that Southgate wants to get the discussion about his squad out of the way before tomorrow night’s final warm-up game against Iceland at Wembley.

Although some players might not be available, will we see something resembling the first-choice Three Lions team against a nation who were responsbile for one of England’s lowest ever Euros moments eight years ago?

Lewis Dunk and Luke Shaw were both following individual training programmes for today’s training session.

16:14

What will England’s starting XI look like against Serbia?

Although Southgate now seems to have decided on his final squad for the tournament, some uncertainty remains about how his team will line up.

It will be especially interesting to see how the likes of Phil Foden and Cole Palmer, both of whom enjoyed outstanding seasons in the Premier League, are used, with the possibility being that they could both be deployed out wide, although there is much competition for places.

The prospect of a midfield comprised of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham is intriguing, but Kobbie Mainoo will also be pushing to start.

Then there are the aforementioned issues at centre-back to consider, while Kieran Trippier may have to be used at left-back depending on whether Luke Shaw is available.

There’s a lot for Southgate to think about ahead of England’s opening game against Serbia on June 16.

16:07

Do England have enough depth at centre-back?

Thank you Harry.

One of the key talking points with regards to the England squad will be the centre-back options.

John Stones, who will hope to be fully fit for the tournament, is undoubtedly a high quality player when at his best.

However, there may well be concerns over some of the other players in that position. Marc Guehi and Lewis Dunk will be looking to feature prominently.

Joe Gomez could perhaps fill in there and the versatile Ezri Konsa is another option, but without Maguire and Branthwaite in the squad England could be vulnerable.

Substitution: Reporter

It’s been short, but sweet.

It’s time for a change of reporter, and I am passing over to the brilliant Jeorge Bird who will take you through the rest of the coverage.

I will be watching from afar, it’s going to be interesting what Gareth Southgate has to say!

15:57

Wharton makes the cut

Adam Wharton has only gone and done it… We think anyway.

According to reports, Wharton has done enough to make the final 26, which is a huge achievement for the 20-year-old.

Six months ago, before his move to Crystal Palace, nobody would have predicted the midfielder to be on his way to Germany.

But after a brilliant start to life in London and an impressive debut against Bosnia, he has made the grade.

The youngster looked so calm and composed on the ball at St James’ Park that fans were in awe of his ability after just a few minutes.

He is going to have a part to play in Germany!

15:51

Are you happy with the 26?

Now that we seemingly know the squad, it’s time to see what you think of it.

It’s clear Gareth Southgate has predominantly picked the squad on form, which is something England fans have been asking for him to do for years.

Now that he has finally done what Three Lions fans have been screaming for, it will be interesting to see what reaction he gets.

I must admit, cutting three centre-backs has surprised me, while he has decided to keep all three strikers in the squad.

So, what are your thoughts on the potential squad?

15:45

Jack Grealish and Harry Maguire AXED by England for the Euros

As I said, there are some big names that have not made the cut.

The biggest two are perhaps Jack Grealish and Harry Maguire, with the latter struggling with a calf injury.

Grealish has struggled for form all season with Manchester City, and despite a bright cameo against Bosnia, he hasn’t done enough.

Just three years ago, many people were calling Grealish England’s star man at Euro 2020, despite his lack of game time.

Well, this year he will get NO game time….
