Premier League LIVE: Score, team news and updates from Manchester United vs Newcastle and Brighton vs Chelsea with Rasmus Hojlund DROPPED

There’s that 17 per cent, then

Mail Sport’s CRAIG HOPE is also at Old Trafford this evening, with a later weather report.

Cagoules at the ready.

Dan Burn talks to Sky Sports, next

Being brought up a Newcastle fan, we’ve never liked Man United. Considering the place we were in over Christmas, the chance to get any European football would be brilliant, and to finish over them for the first time in Premier League history would be an amazing achievement.

On travelling to the tie with relish:

Definitely. We’ve got nothing to fear. They were very good against Arsenal, so we know that, but we’re not scared of anyone and we come here full of confidence.

18:28

Just one win in eight for Man United

Unedifying reading for Manchester United fans, with that single victory in late April coming against record-breakingly vulnerable Sheffield United.

Eddie Howe’s resurgent side represent a tougher prospect.

Embattled Casemiro does keep his place, after all

The Brazilian has endured a star-crossed end to his season, but keeps his place this evening despite recent lacklustre showings against Crystal Palace and Arsenal.

Ten Hag was keen to defend his man, however, saying ahead of kick-off that Casemiro had some high moments amid the low ones.

Some of Man United’s former stars weren’t convinced on Sunday, however, as CHRIS WHEELER noted.

Gary Neville BLASTS Casemiro for his role in Leandro Trossard goal

CHRIS WHEELER: The Gunners faced a potentially difficult task in what was considered by most to be a must-win game at Old Trafford, but any early nerves were eased by an early goal.

Pre-match honours for United’s young stars

Fresh from his triumph as part of Man United’s U18s Premier League-winning side last night, Ethan Weatley is named Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year, and honoured next to the hallowed Old Trafford turf.

Goalkeeper Denzil Haroun was named Reserve-Team Player of the Year this afternoon, too.

Erik ten Hag talks to Sky Sports

On the return of Martinez and Rashford to the bench:

It’s very good because you have seen the last games, we had only academy players on the bench, and now we have some senior players who can make a difference.

On Hojlund dropping to the bench:

We want to keep him remaining fresh. You see sometimes his energy levels are dropping.

On who starts up front (with just a hint of mystique):

You will see. It’s all possible.

On that bench question, a reminder of Man United’s options on Saturday, courtesy of Mail Sport’s NATHAN SALT. When Antony is the hardy veteran, the straits are indeed a little dire.

Wayne Rooney cuts through the noise when asked if he thinks VAR should be scrapped

Please.

The former Man United man adds:

You’re a goalscorer and you’re waiting to celebrate, and the fans are waiting to celebrate (after a goal). I think we should let the referees referee on the pitch.

Also on duty for Sky Sports this evening is Roy Keane, who notes that VAR has taken over punditry itself.

We’re talking about decisions all the time. I’ve not been a fan, and I think it does slow the game down.

Manchester United vs Newcastle: team news, in brief

Only one change from the team that came up against Arsenal on Sunday, as Bruno Fernandes comes back in for Rasmus Hojlund, who drops to the bench.

Lisandro Martinez and Marcus Rashford are back on the bench too, on a brighter note for Ten Hag’s injury-hit side.

Far more significantly for Newcastle, Kieran Trippier is back in the side for his first start in over two months, and he comes in for Tino Livramento. Alexander Isak is fit and ready after a spot of mid-week illness too.

Exclusive: Revealed – The man at the heart of Man United’s summer transfer plans

Manchester United have been forced to play the waiting game with two of their new recruits following Ratcliffe’s February partial takeover, but one man is firmly in position to begin the Ineos revolution.

Mail Sport’s SAMI MOKBEL has the details, below.

Brighton vs Chelsea: team news, in brief

Two changes to the side that held Newcastle to a 1-1 stalemate over the weekend, as a fit and firing Joao Pedro forces Danny Welbeck back to the bench, and an injured Joel Veltman is swapped for former Blue Tariq Lamptey.

A solitary change for the visitors as Thiago Silva drops back to the bench in place of Malo Gusto, with both Ben Chilwell and returning captain Reece James waiting in the wings for possible second-half cameos.

Meanwhile, in other footballing news…

It couldn’t happen, could it?

The Premier League are thought to be looking to Sweden and liking what they see. After five debate-riddled seasons, the English top flight will look to vote on whether they make it six.

Premier League clubs to hold vote on SCRAPPING VAR

It comes after another season of contentious incidents, with the system facing criticism from fans, players and clubs since it was introduced in 2019.

Breaking: TEAM NEWS – How Brighton and Chelsea line up

17:44

Man United’s players have arrived at Old Trafford

We should be expecting team news in just over 15 minutes. More imminently, however, are the line-ups from the Amex. Any second now!

Rio Ferdinand says there are only THREE players that have come to Man United and performed ‘at the level you expect’ in the last decade

Ineos have an overwhelming task in the summer as they prepare to make wholesale changes both on the pitch and off – but the number one priority will no doubt be righting the club’s recruitment policies.

Rio Ferdinand is the latest former United player to damn the outgoing system – can you guess who the three players are?

If not, you can click on the link below. Or double-check you had the right answer…

Rio Ferdinand takes aim at Man United’s poor recruitment

United have notoriously struggled in the transfer market in recent years and have often shelled out huge amounts of money on players that failed to live up to their billing.

The Premier League table, as things stand

Here’s where things are really starting to get interesting. With Manchester City the heavy favourites in the FA Cup Final, places five, six – those tantalising Europa League berths – and seven are well worth watching this evening and on the final day of the season.

Both Chelsea and Newcastle will want to jump well clear of United three points behind them before the last matchday to both ensure a possible shoot-out with Tottenham for fifth (if they can’t brush aside Sheffield United at home) or shake the chance of falling away.

But Ten Hag’s side aren’t without a shout if they triumph on home soil and Mauricio Pochettino’s Blues falter on the road.

Brighton will again play kingmaker of a kind on Sunday when they welcome Man United – who do you think ends up needing their passport when the dust settles?

17:21

Mail Sport’s Nathan Salt is in situ

Scores of other attendees will be cheered to know that BBC Weather has a mere 17 per cent chance of more rain before kick-off.

But will tonight mark Ten Hag’s home farewell to the club he has managed for the last two seasons?

No way, the Dutch head coach batted back during his pre-match press conference on Tuesday.

‘It’s not how I see it,’ Ten Hag said adamantly. Whether it’s the way Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Ineos see it, however, remains to be… seen.

Mail Sport’s CHRIS WHEELER has the full report below.

Fix the holes in the roof and fill the vacancy that gapes wide in Old Trafford’s soul, writes IAN LADYMAN

Drippy, under-resourced, and scarcely fit for purpose – and that’s just Old Trafford (groan).

We are just over three days on from Erik ten Hag’s side’s last run-out at the Threatre of Streams, and despite a looming FA Cup Final to gee fans up, there is little to excite within his ranks as things stand.

Mail Sport’s IAN LADYMAN shared his thoughts from the ground and why change at the club can’t come soon enough.

Let battle for Europa League football commence!

It’s not just the title race going down to the wire. While Aston Villa may have had their place at Europe’s top table confirmed by Tottenham’s stuttered collapse against Manchester City last night, spots in the second tier remain heavily contested.

Three hopefuls take to the pitch tonight, with Manchester United and Newcastle seeing out a proverbial European six-pointer at a hastily patched-up Old Trafford, and Chelsea travelling to the Amex in the last-gasp form which could transform their season.

Spare a thought for Roberto De Zerbi’s Brighton, perhaps: three months ago, you might have assumed the Seagulls, rather than the west Londonders, were the ones still in the hunt.

We’ll bring you updates from the south coast from kick-off at 7.45pm but tonight our eyes will be firmly fixed on Manchester. Can Erik ten Hag’s men put on a show for their home fans for one last time this season? Team news, build-up, and more to come before kick-off at 8pm.
