Israel-Hamas ceasefire in Gaza to come into effect Sunday morning

The ceasefire in Gaza between Israel and Hamas will come into effect on Sunday at 08:30am (06:30 GMT), Qatar’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson announced in a post on X.

“We advise our brothers to take precautions, exercise utmost caution and wait instructions from official sources,” the ministry said on Saturday.

Late on Friday, Benjamin Netanyahu’s cabinet approved the deal after more than 460 days of war in which Israeli forces have killed more than 46,788 Palestinians and wounded 110,453.

The Israeli government ratified the ceasefire agreement early on Saturday morning after meeting for more than six hours, Netanyahu’s office said in a brief statement.

Al Jazeera’s Hamdah Salhut, who is reporting from Amman, Jordan, said the vote taken by the Israeli cabinet was part of “expediting this deal”.

“Initially, they said that they wanted to vote on it on Saturday night, in order to respect those in the right-wing and religious government who were observing the Sabbath,” she noted.

“But the Israeli government decided that life-saving measures were part of the deal, and that’s why they worked well into the night on Friday evening.”

The timeline of the ceasefire earlier announced was slightly different from the actual announcement on Saturday, our correspondent also noted.

“All eyes are now on Gaza to see what the Israeli military is going to do in these final hours, because historically, before any sort of ceasefire deal, the Israeli military pounds the Gaza Strip with all of its might.

“There’s going to be a lot of fear and anxiety. But make no mistake this was a long time coming.”

In Gaza, Israeli warplanes have kept up heavy attacks.

Medics in Gaza said an Israeli airstrike early on Saturday killed five people in a tent in the Mawasi area west of Khan Younis in the enclave’s south.

The Palestinian news agency Wafa reported that a father from the Qudra family was killed along with his wife and their three children in the attack.

An Israeli drone strike also killed three Palestinian civilians in al-Tuffah neighbourhood, east of Gaza City late on Friday, according to WAFA.

This brought to at least 119 the number of Palestinians killed by Israeli bombardment since the ceasefire accord was announced on Wednesday.
